After boiling down the Olympic season, two teams easily stand out from all of the rest; the German women and the Norwegian men. Magdalena Neuner and Emil Hegle Svendsen won the Overall World Cup titles and put their respective teams in such a strong position that they dominated almost every sub category.

Season Review: The Cream of the Crop
Top Athletes Equals Medals
The 2010 Olympic season is now etched in the history books. Although there were many surprises during the season and at the Olympic Winter Games, one fact stands out. Most of the top athletes ended the season with World Cup victories or Olympic medals and the top rankings in the Overall World Cup. The best athletes are at the top of the sport, because year-in and year-out, they “deliver the goods;” they are the cream of the crop.

When Sylvie Becaert started biathlon, simply making an Olympic team seemed like an impossible dream. “I started biathlon in 1998 as part of a strong team that included Corinne Niogret and Ann Briand. I thought that I would never never make the Olympic Games. Then in 2001, I was told that maybe I could make the team for Salt Lake. I said that if I made the Olympic Games, I would finish then, but I am now finally leaving. I never expected to win any Olympic medals.”

Three-year Plan Ends with Olympic Gold and Podium in Final World Cup Appearance
Halvard Hanevold decided to retire from biathlon long before his final season ever started. With that decision, he put together a long term plan so that he might escape the fate of those who decide to leave the sport late in the game “I just did not want to fade out, with a little note in the papers in the middle of April.”
