Eight Days to Go
The e.on Ruhrgas IBU World Cup season started just over two months ago. At that time, the Olympic Winter Games were close, but still a distance down the road. Suddenly, the Games are upon us. The Olympic Cauldron will be lit in Vancouver in just over a week.

23 Days to Go
The pages on the calendar are quickly falling off as the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games rapidly approach. Although this week’s Antholz World Cup competitions will be the final tune-up before Vancouver, the Olympic athletes will be bearing down to get in a final training block before the Olympic cauldron lights up the Vancouver sky in 23 days.

29 Days until Opening Ceremonies; US, Canadian Teams Set
The USA and Canada finalized their Olympic Biathlon teams recently. The US team was completed after an internal competition and the IBU Cup in Altenberg. The Canadian team added their fourth women after a trials series that ended just after the New Year in Canmore, Alberta, site of the 1988 Olympic Winter Games.

Update from Zina Kocher
The Canadian team was visibly absent from the relays in Oberhof this week, although Zina Kocher is expected to compete in the Mass Start competition on Sunday. They stayed at home for an extra week of training, in preparation for their “home” Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the rest of the World Cup season. Coach Geret Coyne explained, “We did this last year and it worked out well. It is a long trip for us and if we turned around right after the New Year to go to Oberhof, there is no time for real training. By staying home for another week, we can get in a good training block.”

As the New Year begins, the days are rapidly counting down to the opening of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Over the years since and before the Games were awarded to the Canadian city, an unimaginable number of hours of planning and work have gone into this project.

IBU Auditor Ray Kokkonen Carries Olympic Flame
The first part of this winter’s Biathlon season is over. When the athletes come back from the Christmas break, there will only be a few short weeks left until the start of the Olympic Winter Games 2010 in Vancouver. In the meantime, the journey to Vancouver continues with the Olympic Torch travelling through Canada. 300 meters of this trip were covered by IBU Auditor Ray Kokkonen.

Megan Tandy Reflects on the First World Cup Week
Megan Tandy, at 21-years old is a biathlon “veteran” of sorts, who has been competing internationally since 2006 and has three Summer Biathlon World Championships medals in her trophy case. This year marks her second season on the World Cup circuit. She got her first taste of the ‘big time” at the 2008 IBU Biathlon World Championships in Östersund.

Zina Kocher Checks In – 73 Days To Go
Zina Kocher is the top Canadian female biathlete going into the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games. In recent seasons, Kocher has finished in the top eight in World Cup competitions on four occasions. The highlight of her career to date is her stunning third place in the 15K Individual here in Östersund in 2006. She considers that podium appearance the most surprising thing that has happened in her life, so far.

Canadian Biathlete Megan Imrie Eager to Start Olympic Season
24-year-old Megan Imrie started skiing as a child in Falcon Lake, Manitoba, where she remembers, “cross-country skiing on Easter Egg hunts. That was always a ski club event for all of the kids. It was exciting to ski along the trail and spot the Easter Eggs in the snow.” If all goes well, this coming February, Imrie will probably be more focused on the trail instead of what is alongside it (crowds of Canadian fans) as she skis along the trails of Whistler Olympic Park. Here are her late November thoughts on the new season and the Olympic excitement.
