Road to Vancouver 8

08.01.2010, Oberhof / Jerry Kokesh
Update from Zina Kocher
The Canadian team was visibly absent from the relays in Oberhof this week, although Zina Kocher is expected to compete in the Mass Start competition on Sunday. They stayed at home for an extra week of training, in preparation for their “home” Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the rest of the World Cup season. Coach Geret Coyne explained, “We did this last year and it worked out well. It is a long trip for us and if we turned around right after the New Year to go to Oberhof, there is no time for real training. By staying home for another week, we can get in a good training block.”

Canadian Olympic Team

In addition to the extra training time, the Canadians held a trials competition to determine the final spot on their Women’s Olympic team. Already qualified are Zina Kocher, Megan Imrie, and Megan Tandy. JP Le Guellec is the male member of the Canadian Team for Vancouver.

Here are Zina Kocher’s comments on the trials and the holiday season that she sent from the Calgary Airport today.

Holidays at Home

“Christmas time was a relaxed and well deserved time at home for the Canadian team. We all flew home the day after a successful pursuit for me and Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, to enjoy Christmas with our families, friends and loved ones.

Training and Trials

After a few days of recovery we were all back training in our respective homes of Canmore, Squamish, and Val Cartier.  Yesterday and this past weekend were the women’s trials for the Vancouver Olympic Games to fill our 4th and final position as the top three Olympic positions were chosen from the December World Cup results. It proved to be an extremely tight, stressful, and exciting 3 days of competition… and not only for those competing! After some intense competition that saw three different women winning three different disciplines, the athlete that qualified for our final Olympic spot and for the next World Cups was Rosanna Crawford.  Crawford is a familiar
name in the Nordic world as Rosanna’s sister Chandra is an Olympic Gold medalist from the 2006 games in Torino in cross country. Our World Cup team departs today for Germany and the final set of World Cups prior to the Olympic Games in Vancouver.”

Team Hobby

Thus the final Vancouver position went to 21-year-old Rosanna Crawford. The picture accompanying this article is the December Canadian World Cup Team having a bit of fun at the Munich airport. Note the knitted headwear on the women; the team hobby is knitting.
