| Adele Walker is one of the senior athletes on the British Biathlon Team that trains in Ruhpolding, Germany. Biathlonworld.com caught spent a day with her recently. | |||||
6.30: Adele gets up. She puts on her training gear and around 7 am, heads out for a warm-up run with her husband Marc, the coach of the Military Biathlon group. "This is not really training yet, it's more to loosen up and get my body to wake up," she explains. 7:20: She enjoys a quick breakfast of Muesli with milk and a cup of coffee at the kitchen counter. She and Marc jump into their car (with English license plates) and head to the shooting range in Ruhpolding. "The British team always trains around here. We first rented a place but realized that, as we are here all the time, we might just as well settle down here. When we found this house, we bought it. We really live here during the whole year and only go home to England two or three times a year. Some of the younger athletes who do not live in Ruhpolding go home every six to eight weeks. But that is quite tough," Adele explains. 8:00: Training starts. Adele is happy: "We got promoted. Normally we are all the way at the end of the range, but today we got moved up further to the front." Adele and the others prepare for their training. Coach Walter Pichler then explains, "The guys run six laps with shooting bout s in between, the girls run five laps plus one short lap just around the start and finish area and shoot in between." After four laps, Adele still grins, but this is obviously no fun anymore: "It hurts now because I can feel that I am getting a blister. But I am still OK, not tired yet!" she pants as she runs by. Two laps later, she is done with the running, but Pichler is not satisfied. They begin a series of speed shooting drills. In teams of two, they fire 10 shots in prone position, getting up after each shot. "Last season my shooting was the biggest problem. This summer my shooting has improved and the test competitions were good. However, this year my running is not good yet. We trained really hard the last few weeks and are in somewhat of a recovery phase right now. As we still have three months left until the start of the season it is not a big problem," Adele explains. 11:30: Training is over. Adele packs up her things and heads home. Once there, she stretched for 20 minutes, took a quick shower and prepared lunch for her and Marc, tortellini pasta with tomato sauce and cottage cheese, followed by a cup of peppermint tea and a slice of raisin bread. 13:30: Adele is out the door again and drives to Traunstein where she had to pick up some insoles for her skating boots. "My knee bends inwards when I skate so I hope they built something for my shoes that will stop that." Normally, she would take a nap for about one hour at this time. However, although recovery is important this was a good day for a missed nap, as there was no afternoon training. 15:00: Adele is back in Ruhpolding, just in time for a team meeting. Instead of a second training session on the tracks, the team is analyzing their technique on video that they recorded during the competitions on the prior weekend. 17:00: Adele arrives at home and relaxes a bit before preparing dinner. For that, she makes chicken fajitas and smiling, says, "My favorite!" She and Marc spend a relaxed evening on the couch, watching TV, before going to bed. 22.00: Bedtime! |
